February 2016.
Dear Fruit Grower:
Have you ever had a family member, neighbor, or friend demonstrate how to propagate fruit trees by grafting? Or do you have a favorite fruit variety that you would like to graft? As a service to Pacific Northwest fruit growers, I am again staging a grafting seminar to teach this useful skill. I invite you to register for it as described below.
The Fifth Idaho Grafting Seminar is Saturday, April 16, 2016, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., under the aegis of and at the Canyon County Extension office, 501 Main Street, Caldwell ID 83605, phone (208)-459-6003. After I discuss and demonstrate how, you will graft scions (cuttings) of apple, pear, or plum varieties suited to the Treasure Valley onto dormant rootstocks to make new fruit trees to take home. After 2-3 weeks, the scions should unite to the rootstocks and then grow leaves and shoots. Given good care, the grafts will grow into trees and be able to produce their first blooms or fruits in 3-4 years. You will also receive a set of illustrated lecture notes.
I gave my first grafting class in Anchorage, AK in 1986. After earning an M.S. in horticulture (in tree fruits) in 1992 from Washington State University, I worked 1992-99 as a horticulturist in the Washington fruit industry in Yakima, meanwhile growing nearly 220 varieties of tree fruit at home. In Minnesota (1999-2007), I grew 49 cold-hardy varieties at my home. In my previous MN and ID grafting seminars, students had good success with their grafts and enjoyed themselves. At my home, I have both an orchard and a nursery emphasizing propagation, testing, and evaluation of superior or unusual tree fruit varieties.
Bring: a large trash bag, pot or bucket to take home your grafts in, plus a utility knife with replaceable blades. If you have a favorite apple, apricot, pear, or plum tree that you would like to propagate, call (208)-407-6781 and ask me how to collect scions from it. We will furnish everything else needed. Please indicate below how many of each type of rootstock (apple, apricot, pear, plum) you would like to graft, so I can ensure that we have enough. The cost of the workshop, $60, must be paid in advance, and the fee includes 4 rootstocks. (The cost of the workshop for current enrollees in the Master Gardener program is $50.) Lunch will be a potluck, bring your favorite dish.
Sincerely,
